I've had many questions revolving around the idea of a book release and have been kicking around various thoughts over the past five years. I am happy to announce that I have finally completed the written portion of a book and have moved on to the illustrating process. I am looking to self release sometime in 2012 and will be opening a Kickstarter page to raise money for the release. Please keep in touch over the next several months as I will continue to post text and images as I complete them! I plan to sell the original paintings as well as prints to anyone who would like to contribute to the book's release once I am three months out from the date of publication. This is a huge project that I am excited to see finally coming to light. Thank you to all who have purchased work from me or just simply written kind words of encouragement. I wouldn't be able to do what I do without your support.

I'd like to thank Jamie over at Literacyhead for including one of my illustrations in their current issue. Literacyhead is a new, online magazine geared toward literacy educators. Their goal is to provide educators with weekly instruction ideas that explore the connections between textual and visual literacy. A big part of what they do involves the use of artwork to help teach different reading and writing concepts. Jamie chose "Let Me Tell You A Story" (pictured above) to include in "Write Starts", an article used to spark ideas for discussions, writing, and thinking! There is also a non-profit extension of Literacyhead that focuses on providing children with extraordinary opportunities for immersion in the arts. Ten percent of all profits from Literacyhead go towards supporting the non-profit branch. If you are a teacher or know someone who is, please take some time to check out/recommend this wonderful site.

A while back I did an interview for Taiwan's DPI magazine which is a great art magazine, featuring illustrators and artists from around the world. I recently received my issue in the mail and it is absolutely fantastic! I thought I would share a few images as well as a part of the interview. My thanks to Chiamin for including me in her beautiful magazine.

You called your blog an “obsolete world”. Also, “department” or “reminiscent” appeared in the titles of works. Would you share the main theme of your works with us? What’s the world you mainly depict in the works?
Obsolete World is a place that no longer exists. All of the inhabitants passed away quite some time ago. My work depicts a world on the brink of extinction. Many of the characters are trying to leave and therefore, escapism is a reoccurring theme in my work. The figures are generally on some sort of expedition or migration. Another common theme is reminiscing, as many of these creatures struggle to deal with the passing of loved ones. More than half of my paintings portray characters just sitting around observing their surroundings in a thoughtful manner. Where does one go when they cease to exist? Is it possible to find safety in a world that is falling apart? What will happen after we are all gone? I never really paint the same character more than once, as many of them are the last surviving members of their species.

How would you describe your art style? What influenced you the most to establish this art style? Also, what are the material you usually prefer to use? What’s the reason it attracts you?
I would describe my art as richly textured character based mixed media illustrations. I’m not exactly sure what category I fit into as far as style goes, but I pour a lot of emotion into these illustrations and I think they often come off as being rather melancholy. In the end, however, I prefer a mix of both humor and sadness. It is the delicate balance of these two things that drives me to create and this is ultimately what I would like for my work to represent. Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) is by far my greatest influence. I also find a lot of inspiration in nature. I prefer watercolor, charcoal, pastel, ink and powdered pigments as I find that they are great for depicting the intricacies I see in this world.

What’s your favorite works so far? Or which work is the most special for you, and why?
I have many favorite works, but I adore “Mysterious Species Conservation” both for its title and subject matter. I am in the process of writing and illustrating a book of short stories based on this piece. As I said earlier in this interview, Obsolete World is a dying civilization. This work represents the conservation efforts of these endangered creatures.

This is my first sketch completed for next month's Get The Lead Out show at Swoon Gallery in Los Angeles, California. Get The Lead Out is an open themed group show that features works done in pencil, ink, etc. I couldn't think of a proper title, so this piece is named after today's Oblique Strategies. It seemed to perfectly capture what was going on in the mind of this little flying guy. I guess sometimes an Oblique Strategy really can help straighten out a "worthwhile dilemma". Give it a try.

I just donated a few prints to the "Help The Gulf Coast" shop on etsy. A big thank you to Kate for setting this whole thing up! This is a collective etsy shop to help the gulf coast recover from the massive BP oil spill. Etsy sellers have donated their items so that 100% of the proceeds can be given to charity. They will be donating 50% of the proceeds to Oxfam America and 50% to the National Audubon Society. Please take some time to check it out. This disaster needs all the help we as human beings can possibly offer. An unimaginable amount of damage continues to unfold day by day and every little thing counts. I grew up on the gulf coast of Florida and most of my family still lives there. This is not just their disaster it is all of ours. In the words of Jean Michel Cousteau " We cannot change what has taken place but we must learn from it. We must embrace a completely different perspective of how we work in, exploit and manage the natural world, far beyond simply the search for new technology. We need a new philosophy about the appropriate use of technology and our relationship with nature. We must remember that it is the natural world that keeps our planet habitable, and so far, most of our activities undermine the health and vitality of nature."

I will be part of an upcoming group show at 323 East Gallery outside of Detroit, Michigan called "Glass Cinder And Thorns". This exhibit is set to open on March 20th.
